We often get questions about how to set up live video streaming with Influxis. We are going to walk you through a straight-forward process here.

One of the most widely used applications to generate a live stream is Adobe’s Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE). FMLE is a desktop application that allows you to broadcast live streaming video and audio, from either a Windows or a Mac machine, using the Flash Media Server (FMS).

Setting Up Flash Media Live Encoder to Generate your Live Stream

On the Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE) panel, in the “Encoding Options” tab section, for now let’s just select “Medium Bandwidth (300 Kbps) – VP6” in the drop down box next to “Preset”. Then select “Output” in the drop down box next to “Panel Options”. See Figure 1.

Check the boxes next to “Video”, “Audio”, and “Stream to Flash Media Server” going across from left to right. See Figure 2.

Enter the following in the “FMS URL”field (see Figure 3):

rtmp://XXXXXXXX.rtmphost.com/myAppDir

Substitute for “XXXXXXXX” above with your own unique Influxis account RTMP ID. Contact Influxis Support if you do not know what that is. Also, substitute for “myAppDir” with the actual name of the application directory within your Influxis account File Manager that you want to connect and stream to.

Now click the green “Start” button at the bottom of the FMLE admin panel. Your live video feed should show in the FMLE Input and Output preview displays as well as in your viewing application window.

Viewing Options

FMLE does not provide a viewing mechanism, so you can use your own video player (such as the Flash FLVPlayback component, the InfluxisPlayer, or a third-party player that supports RTMP live streaming).

The following discussion walks you through setting up both the FMEWebViewer and the InfluxisPlayer to play your live stream from FMLE.

Setting Up the FMEWebViewer to View your Live Stream from FMLE

First, please refer back to Figure 3 and make sure that you set up FMLE to connect to the correct application directory in the “FMS URL” field, as follows:

Please type “FMEWebViewer” (no quotes) exactly in this way, using both capital and lower case letters.

In the “Stream” field, continue to use “livestream” (without the quotes) for illustration purposes.

The FMEWebViewer is designed to work hand-in-hand with Adobe’s FMLE (formerly named Flash Media Encoder, or FME). The Adobe FMLE provides the admin, or broadcasting, portion. Our FMEWebViewer allows you to instantly deploy your FMLE streams on the web without the need for any special setup other than uploading an html, swf, and xml file to a web accessible directory on your web server. It doesn’t get easier than this!

Here’s how to set up the FMEWebViewer:

Login to your Influxis account and click on “Pre-Built Apps”under TOOLS in the left column. Scroll down and click on “Flash Media Encoder Web Viewer v1.0”. Click on the “Download”button to download and save the “FMEWebViewer.zip” file on your local computer. See Figure 4.

A new application directory named “FMEWebViewer”will be automatically created within the File Manager in your Influxis account. See Figure 5.

The FMEWebViewer application consists of two parts: the Admin and the Viewer. The optional Admin panel provides the ability to turn the chat feature on or off, manage chat users, and adjust the size of the video window that the Viewer side displays. You can also adjust live effects to the video stream using the video effects portion of the Admin panel.

We will focus the remainder of this discussion on the Viewer part only.

The following three files for the Viewer portion are included in the downloaded “FMEWebViewer.zip” file:

Upload these files to a common folder location on your web server. To embed a Flash object, such as the FMEWebViewer, into your existing webpage, open (using Notepad in Windows or TextEdit on a Mac) the “viewer.html” file. Then copy the content between and including the <object> and </object> tags and paste/embed it into your existing webpage, where desired.

If you do not want to upload FMEWebViewer to a webpage but, rather, launch the viewer in its own browser window, you can do that as well.

In addition, all of our pre-built applications come with a ready launch URL and embed tags. To locate these, login to your Influxis account and click on “Pre-Built Apps”under TOOLS in the left column. Scroll down and click on “Flash Media Encoder Web Viewer v1.0”. This time, however, click on “Embed Tag/URL”. The embed tag and URL to FMEWebViewer will be instantly generated. See Figure 6.

Once deployed on the web, the FMEWebViewer will display your live stream for you. See Figure 7.

Setting Up the InfluxisPlayer to View your Live Stream from FMLE

Again, please refer back to Figure 3. Let’s set up FMLE to connect to a specific application directory, using the “FMS URL” field, as follows:

Now login to your Influxis account and click on “Influxis Player Builder”under TOOLS in the left column. The first time that you do this, an application directory named “InfluxisPlayer” will be automatically created within your File Manager. See Figure 8.

Figure 9, below, shows two things.

First, you may optionally choose to upload a small video file to an existing application directory in your File Manager. To do so, in section 1 titled “Upload Videos”, simply select the radio button for “Upload New Videos”. Then click on the green “Add” button. After you select the video file to be uploaded from your local computer, click on the green “Upload” button. Afterwards, you will see the next two sections, “Preview” and “Publish”, expand to show options for customizing the player for that video and deploying the player to stream that video.

Second, to skip uploading a video, simply click on either section 2 (Preview) or section 3 (Publish) to expand (show) them.

Unfortunately, at this time the “Customize Player” options provided do not allow for live streaming as an option. Therefore, the “URL” and “Embed Tag” information provided will not work for a live stream.

Scroll down to the bottom and click on the “Download” button to download and save the “InfluxisPlayer.zip” file to your local computer. See Figure 10.

After you unzip the “InfluxisPlayer.zip” file, you will see the following files (see Figure 11):

Right click on the “settings.xml” file and open using Notepad in Windows or TextEdit on a Mac. See Figure 12.

At line 11 in the “settings.xml” file, you will see the RTMP connection path that will be pre-set with your Influxis account ID and the application directory will be pre-set to “InfluxisPlayer”:

If you specified a different application directory in the “FMS URL” field in FMLE, then update this line in the “settings.xml” file to match it.

Starting at 3 lines from the bottom of the file, you will see the following:

There are only two small changes that you need to make. First, in the file=”” parameter, enter the name of your live stream that you provided in the “Stream” field of FMLE (in our example above, we used “livestream”).

Next, change isLive=”false” to isLive=”true” and you are done!

Now upload the InfluxisPlayer files to a common folder location on your web server. To embed a Flash object, such as the InfluxisPlayer, into your existing webpage, open (using Notepad in Windows or TextEdit on a Mac) the “InfluxisPlayer.html” file. Then copy the content between and including the <object> and </object> tags and paste/embed it into your existing webpage, where desired.

Once deployed on the web, the InfluxisPlayer will display your live stream for you. See Figure 13.
